Do You Keep a Bat Under the Bed?

010809_bat.jpgIn movie after movie, when the couple wakes up in the night to a strange noise in the house, the husband grabs a bat from under the bed and goes in search of what might be causing the ruckus. And although nowadays there are more sophisticated home security systems we wondered how many of you keep some kind of weapon near or under the bed just in case? We don't keep a bat, but we do have something, how about you?

Good Questions: Outdoor Shade Blinds?

010809DSC00117.jpgI live in the Phoenix area, and would like something similar to the pictured blinds to put on my deck. I must be using the wrong keywords to search, because I can't seem to come up with anything when I try to google it! Do you know what this type of blind is called? And where I could get some? Preferably a store I can go to so I can take a good look at them in person. Nevanna

How To: Organize A Dresser

010809dresser-02.jpg

We recently helped a friend organize her bedroom--including the dresser drawers. We ended donating many things from her bedroom, but most items came from the dresser. Because dresser drawers are typically the least organized zone in the bedroom, we've come up with some tips on how to organize your dresser (and how to keep it that way).

Flickr Find Gorgeous Patterned Ceiling

010809_ceiling.jpgPerusing Flickr, we found this amazing ceiling in India made completely of inlaid stone (laid piece by piece by hand!). Probably a tad too involved to recreate in your home but if you consider using stencils this is a great DIY idea for a simple bedroom with an unexpected twist.

Fluorescent Fixer Lighting Cover Warms Up CFL Bulb Light

010809CFLDiffuser01.jpgWe just mentioned yesterday about how horribly jarring LED sourced lighting can be compared to warm incandescents, one of the major reasons cited why some people still haven't moved to more energy efficient lighting (knowing what colour temperature makes a HUGE difference). Here's an aftermarket solution to warm up and diffuse the colour/light put out by CFL bulbs if you've got a cold bulb or two you don't want to throw out...

Look! Red Rabbits Heater

10809-heater01.jpgWe're experiencing our version of winter in LA and our apartment, which is located on the first floor and which doesn't get a lot of sun, can get decidely chilly. It's not unusual to come home after a long day to find it colder in our home than it is outside and we snuggle up against the heating vents in the wall while waiting for the heat to take the edge off. How much better if we had this?...

Good Questions: A Chair Like Angelina's?

010809atlagoodquest01.jpgI have been searching for a chair like this one shown with Angelina Jolie above and would love to find some websites and locations where I can find unique, 1 piece furniture...aside from ebay and craigslist (haha). Any sourcing help would be wonderful...

Blogging...My Funny Eye

010809_famapa1.jpgOh man. You know when you find a blog or a Flickr that is chockfull of beautiful photos featuring a cozy home, a lovely family...perhaps an adorable cat snoozing in a nest of striped blankets in the afternoon light? Yes, it's incredibly inspiring because these are "real" homes, not staged for a magazine shoot; and it's great to see how other people arrange popular items that you may have in your own home (like, say, the Ikea Lack floating shelf or Expedit). Well, you might want to add this blog to the list of "Inspiring Homes That Make Me Green With Envy (Really, Can Your Place Be Any More Perfect?)": My Funny Eye. Check out a few of our favorites of Famapa's London home after the jump...

Bed comfort: Body Pillows
Melbourne

080109-BodyPillow-04.jpgOne of the more unexpected gifts we received this Christmas was a body pillow.
We usually sleep with just one head pillow, a very minimal requirement according to this AT survey on how many pillows people sleep with. However the bf does like a few pillows to hug, hence the body pillow gift. After stealing it for a try, we’re now hooked on this odd looking, huggable pillow. More after the jump.

The Designer Catbox

010709CatboxInteriorView.jpgAhh, the good ole litter box...the bane of cat owners all over, not only because of it's obviously distasteful functional nature, but also because they often stick out like a sore thumb with the rest of your home. When it comes to litter boxes, we want them out of sight (and often out of mind...well until our cats remind us we have some cleaning duties to get to). Here's a litter box design recently sent to us which seems tastefully benign (we call it Pottery Barn-esque), shaped like a storage chest and offering an anti-tracking feature...

Roundup: Hand Printed Fabric on Etsy

010709_fabric.jpgYesterday we talked about how to stamp your own patterns onto white sheets to make a custom set. But not everyone has the time to dedicate to that kind of endeavor. So today we've rounded up some very talented etsy sellers who have done the hard part for you by making beautiful simple, handprinted fabric. Cover a pillow, make a bedskirt, or just throw some of these great fabrics across the bottom of the bed to spruce up the bedroom.

Good Questions: Restoring a Wooden Furniture?

010709goodquestchairs.jpgI love reading great responses to AT questions so I thought I'd pose one as I need some advice on restoring these chairs to the AT community. I'm thinking of using these chairs as bedside tables in our master bedroom. The wood is quite raw as you can see. They've been kept outside so the varnish has worn off in places leaving the wood with a gray tinge, especially on the top...
