Adornment can mean many things for a home. Everything we change or add is a move toward functionality and/or beautification. We would never add a functional object that we did not find attractive, but we do add beautiful objects often that do not necessarily have a function. Adornment, on its own, functions to make us happy. Whether thought-provoking artwork or simple eye candy, adorning our homes with things we love is just plain fun. We think whimsical mobiles fit well in this category. Pictured here, the Sprout mobile.

From the Vitamin D(esign) website:

In Japanese, puka puka means "an object gently floating in space". Every Puka puka mobile is an original, handcrafted piece, balancing the forms and colors to ensure each mobile is one of a kind. Invigorate your interior with a Puka puka mobile. The play of light, shadow, and color will enliven any space. Let the fluid movement of the mobile relax you and enthrall children. Materials used: stainless steel, coated stainless steel wire, silver, polypropylene.

These mobiles are designed by Nina Still, and are available through Vitamin D(esign) for $110.

Some of these mobiles are so complex and delicate. I find it relaxing to be able to sit and stare at them.

There is a store in San Francisco called the Art of Navigation on the Embarcadero that has some really cool ones by a local artist.

Eclecticity in Lincoln Square has gobs of mobiles hanging in the back room. Some are arty, some are cutesy, all are affordable.
